Tree stumps can be difficult to remove from the ground. In the old days stumping powder was used to blast stumps into bits. This was very messy and left a large hole which needed to be filled in. Now stumps are dug out (very time consuming), bunt, but more commonly shredded with a stump grinder.
A common method for stump removal is to use one of the many chemical stump removal products if immediate results are not needed. Chemical stump removers are mostly made of potassium nitrate (KNO3) and act by rapidly increasing the decay of the stump. After about 4–6 weeks, the stump will be rotten and easily broken up into manageable pieces. If time is a limiting factor, setting fire to the stump is effective because once the potassium nitrate has been absorbed it acts as an effective oxidizer. This can be dangerous as it could cause a field or forest fire for which one could be held liable.
We offer the only safe solution which is a stump grinder to shred the stump to around 8" inches below the surface of the soil. It's immediate and nearly always stop any regrowth. Like all stump removal methods, over time a small depression can occur where the roots once were as the soil will compact over time.
